Learning Support
The concept of learning support at Day Waterman College is distinctive in that it anticipates that all students, at some time in their life, will require some additional support in relation either to their learning, physical or emotional needs.
Upon entry to the college all students will be tested for reading ages, spelling ages and cognitive levels. This will provide a rough benchmark as to how an individual student is functioning according to their ability. Note that we are not testing what the student already knows but assessing what he/she is capable of learning. In other words, it is about identifying broad potentials within each young person.
Day Waterman College believes in an integrated model for the delivery of learning support programmes. Students will not be withdrawn from the classroom to receive additional help, other than in exceptional circumstances. Differentiation within the planned curriculum, plus extra help or direction outside of the classroom context will be the preferred method of delivery.
