The School

Day Waterman College is a co-educational boarding school for children between the ages of 11-18 years, Year 7 to Year 13, which will provide a world class education to young people. Once fully built, the College will teach a maximum number of 720 students comprising 25 students per class for 4 arms and 7 academic years. The College will begin in September 2008 with a maximum intake of 100 Year 7 students and 100 Year 8 students.

Day Waterman College is the vision of a Nigerian Banker who having educated his own children at International schools wanted to be able to afford able children in Nigeria the same opportunity of a quality education regardless of their economic situation. 70% of the students will be fee paying and the other 30% admitted on bursaries funded by sponsors.

The founding team consists of Architects, Business and Educational Consultants, with international experience in their own field. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is also backing this project. This group of professionals will continue as the governing body.

Mission statement: Day Waterman College prepares children for the present and the future through a balanced, wide ranging and challenging curriculum that develops skills and personal attributes which will enable them to become honourable, responsible, disciplined leaders of their own communities, their country and the world.

School motto: Leadership, Knowledge, Character

Location, Campus and Facilities

The College is being built on a 35 hectare site in Asu, near the Ogun state capital of Abeokuta. The area is very peaceful, yet benefits from being approximately one hour's drive from Lagos, on the main expressway. The College has a large office in Ikoyi, which also has guest housing available for the use of senior staff.

With the very generous capital investment it has been possible to design and build a state-of-the art facility with a focus on the learning needs of the 21st Century. Unusually, great emphasis has been placed on quality and aesthetic awareness which will result in Day Waterman College offering the finest facility in Africa.

Classrooms
Each classroom is a generous size for only 25 students and will have connections for all students to be able to use laptop computers . They will be fully air-conditioned, as with all the offices and teaching areas. There will also be a room for guidance and counseling.

Library
This is intended to be a welcoming environment with areas for relaxed reading as well as a study area for 120 students. It will have generous shelving and storage, librarian's office and a multi media computer area.

Vocational Centre
This will house music rooms with adjoining practice rooms, art rooms & a permanent exhibition gallery, home economics room and technical workshops, amongst others.

Multi-purpose Hall
This will be large enough to accommodate the whole school and be used for assemblies, sports, performances and other school events. A theatre is planned for following phases of development.

Space has been allocated to develop extra sports facilities at a later date. The swimming pool is in the grounds of the Guest House.

Staffed by two resident nurses who will administer treatment for minor illnesses and look after students in need in nursing care.

Staff Residences

Guest House
The College will make provision for a 16 room guest house to accommodate visiting parents and also to provide bar and recreational facilities for teaching staff.

Student Body, Faculty and Administration

The student body is expected to be mainly Nigerian with a few foreign nationals. Coming from families who place a high premium on a good education, students are likely to be enthusiastic and disciplined, and motivated to make the most of the academic opportunity afforded to them.

For the first phase the College is employing an expatriate Principal, Vice Principal, supported by four experienced expatriate teachers to manage a team of locally hired teaching and non-teaching staff. It is hoped that the school's location, facilities and good salaries will attract some of the country's best teachers.

CURRICULUM

The College will include some aspects of the Nigerian curriculum but go beyond the national requirements to provide a broad-based and truly balanced education of international standard to enable young people to thrive and prosper in our global society. Students will sit IGCSE examinations from Cambridge University in Year 11. In year 12 & 13, students will be able to pursue a slightly more specialised curriculum which best suits their talents, capabilities and interests.

Entry into the College is based on academic performance through an entrance examination, a report from the previous school and an interview.

Discipline

Day Waterman College will ensure the smooth running of the school through clear rules under which all staff will work together to uphold the welfare and safety of all students and staff in a fair and consistent way. Corporal punishment will not used at the College! The aim of the rewards and sanctions policy of the school will be to promote self-discipline and enable students to behave responsibly by being given responsibilities.

Dress

The students wear a uniform of grey trousers (boys), or grey skirts (girls), with yellow shirts and tie. A blazer is only worn on formal occasions. Teaching staff are expected to set a good example by dressing smartly with male staff wearing a shirt and tie.

Additional Information

Staff who would enjoy being a Housemaster or Housemistress, in addition to a reduced teaching timetable, should state this in their application.

The accommodation for the Housemaster/mistress is a self-contained three bedroom house linked with a door from the housemaster/mistress' office to the students accommodation. A resident tutor and matron, to support the Housemaster/mistress, also reside in their own flats within the boarding house. We wish to establish the high level of care and supervision, and aim to give the same excellent emotional, social and physical support as found in good UK boarding schools.

The successful candidate should be able and willing to teach several subjects within their curriculum area to lower school students.

Day Waterman College is a boarding school and as such will offer students extensive extra curricular activities. All teaching staff will be expected to contribute fully to these activities and involve themselves in all aspects of life on the campus, during term time.

Please do not apply if the thought of this does not excite you!

In the opening year there is only provision for educating children of Year 7 & 8 age, so unfortunately, families with children of other ages, unless very young, cannot be considered. We would welcome applications from single teachers, teaching couples and teachers with a spouse who could work in the health centre or administration.

Being in at the beginning of a new school and helping to shape the ethos of DWC is an exciting and rewarding opportunity. With parents, students, teachers and the founding team all investing their enthusiasm and optimism in the College it should prove to be a very positive place to work. We look forward to receiving your application.
