Welcome Message from the Head Teacher
Dear Parents
I consider myself both fortunate and privileged to have enjoyed a career in education to date that has spanned 31 years, during which time I have worked with young men and women of different ages and nationalities in the unifying process of teaching and learning.
Although Day Waterman College will provide and develop excellent facilities in spacious and tranquil surroundings, the school will be so much more than just a collection of buildings - it will become a community of people working and learning together. I do not see children as simply joining this school. Instead I see them as becoming the school.
My job is to help establish and lead the school forward, working collaboratively and in a genuine partnership with all stakeholders - students, staff, parents, governors, other schools and community partners, including government agencies.
The fundamental principles or cornerstones that should guide us in this process are the core principles of this school. Young people will be challenged with a range of learning activities that are demanding and yet realistic. This requires that students are fully aware of, and are involved in determining, the outcomes of their learning, so that they are clear about their short-, and longer -term goals. They must know where they are going and what they are aiming for!
In achieving these goals it is important that students take responsibility for their learning, so that they develop into independent and passionate life-long learners. If we want them to accept this key responsibility, then they must be given responsibilities whilst they are at school.
Finally, young people and staff need to be working together to achieve clear and high expectations in all that they do, and should never be satisfied with mediocrity or second best.
I am looking forward to working with you all in fulfilling the immense potential of Day Waterman, as well as every young person who comes to work and learn with us.
Yours sincerely
Bernie Gilman
